Senne Lammens Proves Paul Scholes Wrong With Stellar Manchester United Form

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has silenced critics, including former club legend Paul Scholes, with his outstanding performances this season. Scholes had previously dismissed Lammens as 'not a top goalkeeper' and urged United to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma instead.

United signed Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18.1 million in the summer of 2025, a move that raised eyebrows. Scholes criticised the decision, saying the fee reflected Lammens' quality and that United should have pursued Donnarumma, who eventually joined Manchester City.

However, Lammens has been one of the Premier League's standout goalkeepers. In 21 league appearances, he has conceded just 26 goals and kept 10 clean sheets. His performance in a 1-0 win at Everton on Monday earned him the Premier League Player of the Match award, with four saves and commanding presence.

Speaking after the Everton match, Lammens said: 'I just try to stay calm, play my own game. I know I have the qualities, I wouldn't be here otherwise.' He was compared to former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, adding: 'If I'm in a comparison with Edwin van der Sar, it's always nice to hear.'

According to OPTA's expected goals on target model, Lammens has prevented 5.5 more goals than the average goalkeeper since his debut on 4 October 2025, the best record in the league. United have lost only twice in his 21 appearances, and he has established himself as the clear No. 1 ahead of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
