Lachie Neale Commits to Brisbane Lions but Future Beyond Season Remains Uncertain
Lachie Neale's Brisbane Lions Future Uncertain Beyond This Season

Lachie Neale has publicly declared his intention to remain with the Brisbane Lions for the immediate future, yet he acknowledges that a definitive decision regarding his playing career beyond this season is still several months away. The esteemed midfielder, who is set to celebrate his 300th AFL game this Sunday against Melbourne at the MCG, finds himself out of contract as the season concludes.

Personal Challenges and Professional Dedication

The off-season dissolution of his marriage has resulted in Neale's children relocating to Perth, where he previously spent seven seasons with Fremantle before his unexpected transfer to Brisbane. This move east was pivotal in bolstering the Lions' pursuit of consecutive premierships. Despite these personal upheavals, the 32-year-old veteran has commenced the current season in strong form, positioning himself as a highly coveted asset for numerous rival clubs across the league.

Weighing Factors for the Future

In a statement on Tuesday, Neale elaborated on the considerations that will influence his ultimate choice. 'Family, football, my own happiness, there's a lot that will go into that,' he remarked, highlighting the multifaceted nature of his decision-making process. He emphasized his affection for the club, stating, 'I'm nowhere near making a decision yet, but what I do know is I love this football club. I'll probably try and do everything I can to stay, but if not … we'll weigh that all up over the next three or four months.'

Neale's commitment to success remains unwavering, as he added, 'I want to win premierships every year ... next year, or this being my last year, that doesn't come into it at all.' Since joining the Lions in 2018, he has served as co-captain during both premiership victories and earned the club's best and fairest award four times, though he has relinquished leadership responsibilities this season to concentrate more intensely on his performance.

Focus on Football and Team Dynamics

Reflecting on his recent approach, Neale shared, 'I've been able to really narrow my focus and concentrate a lot on my football over the last few months and put in a lot of work. I've been very lucky to have great teammates, coaches, support staff around the club to help me do that as well.' Expressing optimism about his tenure, he noted, 'Hopefully it's not (my last year here). Hopefully I'm in a Brisbane jumper until I'm 36.'

In related team news, midfield partner Josh Dunkley, who along with Hugh McCluggage has been elevated to co-captain alongside Harris Andrews, will mark his 200th game this Sunday. Neale praised Dunkley's contributions, saying, 'All the little things he does ... a lot do see it now and recognise it. But he's done it for a long time ... sort of completes our midfield in a way.' He further commended Dunkley's selfless play, 'He tries to make his teammates the best player on the ground and that's a special trait for someone who could go and get 35 (touches) ... he's happy to do all the dirty work.'
