The family of Kevin Keegan have expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of tributes following the football legend's death at the age of 75. Keegan passed away on July 20 after a battle with stomach cancer, leaving behind his wife Jean and their two daughters.
Family statement and funeral plans
In a statement issued through the League Managers Association, the Keegan family said they have been "truly overwhelmed" by the volume of tributes. They have arranged a small private funeral in the coming weeks and have requested privacy during this difficult time. A memorial service hosted by Newcastle United will be held at a later date, with details to be communicated in due course.
Fundraiser for charities
The family has also set up a fundraiser in Keegan's honour, supporting The Christie Charity and Football Families for Justice. The Christie provided immeasurable help to Keegan and his family, while Football Families for Justice supports former players suffering from neurodegenerative diseases linked to heading the ball.
The fundraiser describes Keegan as "a sporting superstar, but also a husband, father, grandfather and friend - Kevin gave so much to us all."
Newcastle United's tribute
Newcastle United, where Keegan enjoyed his most successful spell as a manager, paid tribute, saying: "Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters." The club highlighted his role in transforming perceptions of the club and igniting the city with hope and pride.
