Roy Keane has delivered a blunt verdict on Trent Alexander-Arnold's continued absence from the England squad under Thomas Tuchel. The former Liverpool star has made just one appearance for the Three Lions since Tuchel took charge, despite improved form at Real Madrid.
Speaking on The Overlap panel, Keane questioned the logic of selecting 12 players ahead of the right-back, stating: "Some of the lads ahead of him, they aren't even good defenders." When Gary Neville listed Djed Spence, Tino Livramento and Jarell Quansah as alternatives, Keane added: "And are they much better?"
Keane also dismissed the argument that versatility should be a deciding factor, saying: "Why do people always talk about the England squad and go 'well they can play [both right and left-back]'? You just want lads that are really good, not jack-of-all-trades."
Neville highlighted the contrast with previous years when England had an abundance of top right-backs in Reece James, Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker. He noted that with James injured and Trippier and Walker retired, Alexander-Arnold's exclusion raises questions.
Alexander-Arnold's move from Liverpool to Real Madrid last summer has been challenging, with injuries disrupting his early months. However, he has regained form since February, impressing in the Champions League win over Manchester City. He now faces a quarter-final against Bayern Munich and former teammate Luis Diaz.
