Harry Kane scored a dramatic late double to secure England's place in the World Cup last 16 with a 2-1 victory over Democratic Republic of the Congo, sparking scenes of wild celebration across London.
Match Recap
England trailed for the majority of the match before captain fantastic Kane equalised and then netted the winner, avoiding an almighty upset. The victory was met with jubilation as thousands left work early to watch the game in the city's pubs.
Reactions
Outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was among the first to congratulate Thomas Tuchel's men, posting on X: "It might actually be coming home." The official England X account posted a picture of Kane with the caption: "Because maybe, you're going to be the one that saves me" – a reference to the Oasis hit "Wonderwall," a favourite among England fans in the US this summer.
Football writer Barney Ronay hinted at England's reliance on their captain, posting: "The Democratic Republic of Harry Kane into the last 16."
Fan Scenes
As tradition dictates during big matches, BOXPARK Croydon was awash with hundreds of fans who went crazy when England equalised, and beer-throwing antics returned when Kane scored the winner. BOXPARK Wembley, a short walk from England's iconic home stadium, was also full of happy fans at full time.
They were joined by many Harry Styles fans making a stop to watch the Three Lions ahead of the former One Direction star's concert at the stadium on Wednesday evening.
Opposition and Next Match
Earlier in the match, a sizeable number of DRC fans had been seen wildly celebrating on the streets of the capital. After England's late comeback, The Leopards will head home to Kinshasa, while the Three Lions move on to face hosts Mexico in Mexico City in the early hours of Monday morning.
