Kane and Bellingham Shine as England Beat Panama 2-0

Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham scored as England beat Panama 2-0 in New Jersey to secure top spot in Group L at the 2026 World Cup. The goals came from Bellingham in the 53rd minute and Kane in the 58th, the first time the pair have combined for a goal from open play since September 2023. England will now face the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the last 32 on Wednesday.

England's Defensive Concerns

Despite the win, manager Thomas Tuchel acknowledged issues in defence. Right-back Jarell Quansah rolled an ankle against Panama and is a doubt for the next match. Tino Livramento has already flown home with an injury, and Reece James is racing to be fit for the last 16. “It’s a moment to keep believe and pushing,” Tuchel said. Panama, who exited the tournament without scoring, created chances against England, exposing a shaky backline that sharper attacks may exploit.

Bellingham and Kane's Growing Partnership

The duo have scored five of England's six goals in the tournament. Bellingham's driving runs and Kane's positioning are complementing each other effectively. “They work in units,” Tuchel said. “If you see the chance in the first half where Jude does the run into the box, Nico O’Reilly does this run to just take an opponent out.” The partnership faltered at Euro 2024 but has revived in the US.

Other Attackers Need to Step Up

Tuchel called for more contributions from other forwards. Marcus Rashford started against Panama and was lively but lacked a clinical final ball. Morgan Rogers was ineffective as a No 10, and Anthony Gordon has struggled when denied space. Bukayo Saka has two assists but is building sharpness. “We want these guys in a key moment to show up,” Tuchel said. “I am sure Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Noni, Bukayo will do it when the time is there.”

Next Challenge: DR Congo

The DR Congo held Portugal in their opening game and feature Sunderland's Noah Sadiki and Newcastle's Yoane Wissa. Tuchel emphasised the need for collective improvement. “Sometimes, it’s just a run from someone else to open the space up for Jude so that he can shine,” he said. England will need to tighten up defensively while relying on their star duo to deliver.
