UEFA and French authorities have launched investigations into allegations that Juventus fans made Nazi salutes and monkey noises during the club's Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed an investigation into public provocation of racial hatred after reviewing surveillance footage and detaining four supporters.
UEFA stated it had opened a disciplinary investigation regarding discriminatory behaviour by Juventus supporters at the Parc des Princes, where the Italian side lost 2-1. Under UEFA rules, Juventus is responsible for the conduct of its fans and could face sanctions including partial or full stadium closures for future Champions League fixtures, as well as fines.
The allegations were brought to light by three French anti-discrimination groups, including SOS-Racisme, which called for a strong response from UEFA and welcomed the Paris prosecutor's inquiry. The group suggested further arrests could occur in Italy.
Juventus has not yet commented on the incident. The investigations come amid heightened scrutiny of fan behaviour in European football, with governing bodies increasingly taking action against racism and extremism.
