Justin Rose Re-energised and Ready for More After Joint Third at Masters
Justin Rose has emphatically refused to write off his major championship chances after securing another impressive near-miss at the Masters Tournament. The English golfer, who won the US Open in 2013, finished in a tie for third place at Augusta National, just two shots behind the victorious Rory McIlroy. This performance represents Rose's eighth top-10 finish at the prestigious Masters event, underscoring his remarkable consistency on one of golf's most challenging courses.
Rose Holds Lead on Back Nine Before Final Round Charge
During a thrilling final round, Justin Rose actually held the lead on the back nine on Sunday, demonstrating his competitive spirit and skill under intense pressure. Although he ultimately could not maintain that position, his final-round score of 70 was enough to secure a joint third finish. This result follows a heartbreaking playoff loss to Rory McIlroy at the Masters just one year ago, highlighting Rose's resilience and determination to compete at the highest level.
"In the last two years I've really re-kicked on and re-energised my career and myself and have a lot of belief there is a lot of runway ahead," Rose stated after his round. He acknowledged a difficult period spanning 2021 to 2023 but emphasised that from the middle of 2023 onwards, he has been playing some exceptionally good golf. "These are the tournaments I focus on. These are the tournaments why I practise. These are the tournaments that get me going that extra mile to have to show up and keep being in these great arenas," he added passionately.
Inspiration from Veterans and Consistent Augusta Form
Justin Rose's record at Augusta National is truly impressive, with eight top-10 finishes that include three runner-up placements. He expressed hope that he can maintain this high level of performance, drawing inspiration from veteran players who have excelled at the Masters well into their careers. "You look at Freddie [Couples], the way he plays around here. Bernhard Langer, the guys get around," Rose noted. "It does show this course, maybe more than anywhere, suits maybe personal style or knowledge."
This latest top finish marks Rose's fourth top-six result in his past eight major championship appearances. Having also secured a victory on the PGA Tour in February, the 45-year-old firmly believes he still possesses the ability to compete for major titles. His performance at the Masters serves as a powerful testament to his enduring talent and competitive fire.
Tyrrell Hatton Joins Rose with Best Major Finish
Fellow Englishman Tyrrell Hatton finished alongside Justin Rose in joint third place, achieving his best-ever result in a major championship. Hatton charged through the field with a spectacular final round of 66, which included six birdies and an eagle. This strong performance follows his joint fourth finish at last year's US Open, indicating that his game is steadily improving in golf's most significant events.
"I try not to treat them any differently," Hatton commented regarding major tournaments. "Still go out there every day and every round, every shot and try the best I can." He suggested that he might need to refine his preparation slightly, perhaps through additional putting practice early in the week, to become even more ready for these high-stakes competitions.
Having now participated in ten Masters tournaments, Hatton feels increasingly comfortable on the Augusta National course. "My results the last three years have definitely improved [he has finished tied-ninth and tied-14th] which is nice. I've got a little bit more comfortable on the course on certain shots," he explained. This growing confidence bodes well for his future performances in major championships.
