Arne Slot has praised Liverpool and Wolves fans for their emotional tribute to Diogo Jota during Liverpool's 2-1 win at Anfield. The former striker, who died in July, was honoured by both sets of supporters in a coordinated display of respect.
Jota's two young sons, Dinis and Duarte, served as mascots for the match. In the 18th minute, Wolves fans sang for Jota, prompting applause from Liverpool supporters. In the 20th minute, the roles were reversed as Anfield acclaimed the late striker, based on his squad numbers at the two clubs.
“It was difficult but in a way also special and nice,” Slot said. “The football world again showed how to behave in moments like this. Our fans have been incredible since the tragedy happened. Today the away fans showed it is not only about our fans.”
On the pitch, Florian Wirtz scored his first Liverpool goal since his £116m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, helping Slot's side extend their unbeaten run to seven games. Slot described the goal as a relief for Wirtz, adding: “He will be the first to understand that one goal is not enough. Hopefully he will score many more.”
