Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has asked to leave the club. The 15-year-old requested that his academy registration be cancelled last month after a breakdown in his relationship with the club.
United were stunned by the timing of the request, as Gabriel had been included in Michael Carrick's squad to face Brighton in the Carabao Cup, where he was set to become the youngest competitive player in the club's history.
Why Gabriel wants to leave
The BBC reported that Gabriel and his representatives believe promises regarding his route to the first team have not been fulfilled. The teenager travelled with the squad for much of United's pre-season but was given only eight senior minutes, against Atletico Madrid, while Sky Sports reported that his camp also wanted greater involvement in first-team squads after the season got underway.
Gabriel has not trained with United since scoring a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah on September 10 and has since travelled to Barcelona. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with the youngster, while Barcelona sporting director Deco publicly insisted the Catalan club were not involved in a deal despite Gabriel being in the city.
Early years and name change
Gabriel was born in London on October 6, 2010 and raised in Enfield. His birth name is Joseph Junior Andreou O'Cearuill, with his father, former Republic of Ireland international Joe O'Cearuill, later changing the family surname to Gabriel.
His profile was already growing before he reached 10, with a YouTube video showcasing the nine-year-old's skills going viral and leading to the nickname 'Kid Messi'. Gabriel spent time with the academies of Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham before joining Manchester United at 11 in 2022.
Record-breaking rise
Gabriel made his England Under-15s debut in February 2025 before signing a long-term sponsorship agreement with Nike the following month. Aged just 14, he became the youngest player to represent United's Under-18s when he came off the bench against Leeds United, scoring twice in a 13-1 win.
Amid interest from other clubs, including repeated links with Barcelona, United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, became personally involved in talks that persuaded Gabriel to commit his immediate future to the club. He was then invited with his family into the Old Trafford directors' box for United's Premier League opener against Arsenal.
Gabriel began his first full Under-18 campaign at only 14, including a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Derby and seven goals in his opening six matches. He took part in his first full senior training session on October 23, shortly after turning 15. Then-head coach Ruben Amorim described Gabriel as a "really talented guy" and said exposing youngsters to first-team training allowed them to understand the increased pace and difficulty required at senior level.
Awards and first senior appearance
Gabriel scored a hat-trick as United demolished Liverpool 7-0 in November before scoring on his FA Youth Cup debut at Old Trafford against Peterborough the following month. Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher, by then temporarily in charge of United's senior side, resisted calls to throw Gabriel into the FA Cup game against Brighton, saying a senior debut was still "a little bit early".
Gabriel finished the campaign with 23 Under-18 league goals, becoming the inaugural Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season and the youngest-ever winner of United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award. He also helped Fletcher's side reach both the FA Youth Cup final and Under-18 Premier League Cup final.
Carrick involved Gabriel in his senior pre-season plans, and the teenager came off the bench against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on August 1. At 15, he became United's youngest ever player to appear for the senior side, albeit in a friendly.
Gabriel scored and provided two assists on his Premier League 2 debut against Ipswich. Ryan Giggs called Gabriel a "generational talent", while Rio Ferdinand praised his two-footed finishing, balance and ability to avoid contact with defenders. Wayne Rooney has since described him as a "special talent" who understands the game exceptionally well.
Just days after his Youth League hat-trick against Sabah, Gabriel stopped training with United, and his camp formally requested that his registration be cancelled so he could move on as a free agent. Carrick then urged caution around the scrutiny being placed on a 15-year-old, saying United had to consider Gabriel's welfare, wellbeing and exposure as discussions over his future continued. United have not released their most highly-rated academy player and had hoped to repair the relationship. Gabriel turns 16 this Tuesday and is now old enough to sign scholarship terms, while a professional contract cannot be signed in England until he is 17.
