Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase has been hit with a significant punishment from the NFL, receiving a one-game suspension without pay for an on-field spitting incident.
The On-Field Altercation
The controversy erupted during the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The league has stated that Chase spat on Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey. This act prompted an immediate retaliation from Ramsey, who grabbed Chase's face mask and threw a punch. This response led to Ramsey's ejection from the fixture.
Despite Chase denying the allegation and game officials confirming they did not witness the event, the NFL proceeded with the suspension. The decision was made under a specific regulation that addresses acts contrary to the expected standards of sportsmanship.
Financial and Competitive Consequences
The suspension carries a heavy financial penalty for the star player. As a result of the ban, Chase will forfeit at least $448,333.33 in base salary. Furthermore, he will be forced to sit out the Bengals' upcoming crucial home game against the New England Patriots.
This is not the first time the league has dealt with such behaviour this season. The suspension marks the second instance of a player being punished for spitting, following a similar incident involving Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

According to the official announcement, Ja'Marr Chase retains the right to appeal the decision. This gives the player and his representatives a pathway to contest the league's ruling.
