Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has called on his side to be more clinical and to learn quickly from their mistakes as they prepare to face Everton for the second time in five days on Monday at St James' Park.
The Magpies had 28 shots to Everton's 11 and led on shots on target nine to five, but many of their efforts were speculative. Jaissle, asked whether his side were now better prepared for the rematch, said: "It was exactly the game we expected."
Frustration into motivation
Reflecting on the defeat, Jaissle said: "I think they showed that desire to win throughout the whole 90 minutes and not only in the end. But in the end, you can go all in. Especially when we scored it felt maybe there's something special possible this evening but of course time was running out. Now it's about taking that frustration and turning it into motivation for Monday and having the approach for the rematch on Monday."
He also highlighted the support of the away fans: "It was also fantastic with 8,000 spectators (away from home) but of course I'm looking forward to play against the same opponent on Monday at home in front of much more of our fans to support us. They give us this extra feeling, this extra energy and that helps for sure to get a better result on Monday."
Learning from mistakes
Jaissle stressed the need for improvement: "We take this as a long-term journey, and our approach is to make progress, to see improvements. I think now it's time to learn fast from the mistakes we just did and we mentioned. There are other phases where you can see we have improved and this is something we can count on, and we can build on. This is the good part but in the end football is also about results, so you need to avoid these simple mistakes."
The 38-year-old German, who previously managed FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, described Everton's goals as poor ones to concede. He said: "We are of course, disappointed with the result. It's also a bit shocking at the moment because overall the game was not that bad, but it's a bit of the story of the season so far that in a situation where it really counts, we lack in the clinic approach to solve the situations.
Costly errors
"Just think about the first goal, you know, this is again a no risk zone where we said, 'clear the ball' and nothing happens. A couple of seconds later, you conceded a goal out of nothing. The second one is also frustrating as, in my point of view, we deserve to have a penalty. On the other hand, and then you miss you miss that in a transition then to defend their own box, which is, again, for me, difficult to accept. We have clear rules how to behave in these matters. The third one, again, a critical ball loss, when you hit position and the position is punishing you on that level, pretty clear.
"These are the things we need to learn quickly. On the other hand, I think you also saw the game and the statistics. We had many, many occasions, many, many opportunities to score, big chances as well. Also in their box, we need to be more clinical to get a different result."
