Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has refused to be drawn on what he considers Nick Woltemade's best position, leaving the debate open after the German international started as a No 10 in the Magpies' 2-1 pre-season win over Valencia.
Woltemade's role in Valencia friendly
Woltemade, who was replaced by Joe Willock in the 67th minute at the Mestalla Stadium, operated behind striker Will Osula in a 4-2-3-1 formation, a system Jaissle frequently employed during his time at Al-Ahli. The 24-year-old, a record £69million signing, has previously been deployed as a centre-forward and a midfielder since joining the club.
Despite the forward's lack of impact in the match, Jaissle kept his options open when asked about his preferred role, saying: "I think it could be one of the positions he shows his strength. But there are also other positions, one more higher, where he can also shine. It's something we need to see in the upcoming weeks. How also his team-mates are going to do, so nothing besides that."
Woltemade's preference and next opportunity
The former Stuttgart and Werder Bremen player has previously stated his preference for playing with freedom, telling Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller in a recent interview: "Preferably in a two-striker system or behind the striker. It's better for me to play with a lot of freedom and when I have someone around me."
Woltemade will have another chance to impress in the role on Wednesday when Newcastle face Everton at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium.
