Matthias Jaissle admitted he could not wait to confront referee Bobby Madley after boiling over at the end of Newcastle United's 3-2 Carabao Cup win over West Bromwich Albion.
Jaissle was left enraged after Madley waved play on following a brutal foul on Anthony Elanga down the touchline at St James' Park. Images of Jaissle questioning Madley have already gone viral and been turned into a GIF on social media, with the German coach far from happy about the decision.
Jaissle's post-match comments
Speaking to reporters in his press conference, Jaissle said: "I don't want to talk straight away after the match with them (refs), but it was one interesting decision just before he whistled. I wanted to let him know that I saw it differently."
The five-goal thriller earned Newcastle a third-round spot, with the Magpies now heading to Millwall for a tough encounter against the Championship side. Newcastle have not visited Millwall since 1993 during the Kevin Keegan era at the old Den, and have never played at the New Den.
Penalty concerns and Woltemade's form
The game also featured a second penalty against the Magpies in the space of a few days, with Lewis Hall again costing his side with a poor decision at the Leazes End. For the second time in the Jaissle era, Newcastle were punished by a spot-kick.
Jaissle said: "I think I would have less headaches if we weren't conceding penalties at the moment."
One of the other big talking points was the performance of Nick Woltemade, who did not come close to scoring and was starved of service. When asked if the player was suffering psychologically or had a confidence issue in front of goal, Jaissle said: "I am not a psychologist, I don't know. For us, it is clear that we will always support him."
He added: "And beforehand I've said he is really committed, and if you see him in training, you will see that even more, a really hard worker. So we are really pleased - it is just a matter of time before he scores."
Transfer window stance
Jaissle then stated he would not be interested in losing Woltemade in the remaining days of the window, with Borussia Dortmund linked, while he also felt the same could be said of Joe Willock, who has been linked with Besiktas.
He went on: "I expect all the players to stay as we are speaking today but football is complex - things can change from one day or the other."
