Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has said he would not hesitate to hand Mason Miley his Premier League debut against Liverpool next weekend, but expects "changes" before the clash.
The 17-year-old academy product impressed in pre-season, particularly against Bayer Leverkusen, where he was named man of the match. Jaissle pulled the player aside for a hug after the game, with Miley suffering from cramp after a tireless display.
Jaissle praises Miley's attitude
Speaking to Chronicle Live, Jaissle said: "I was really happy. Mason did an amazing job, a young lad, suffering cramps, we mentioned it in the locker room that this is the attitude we need. Suffering until the end until the tank is empty, great attitude so I am really happy for him."
Miley has overtaken Leo Shahar in the pecking order during pre-season, with Shahar set for a chance against Strasbourg. Newcastle are also working on a £25m deal for Benfica's Amar Dedic, but Miley's form could see him start against Liverpool.
Transfer activity expected
When asked if Miley would play against Liverpool, Jaissle said: "There is still time before the Liverpool game. We have to wait to see, but as you saw against Leverkusen, he has the right heart and the right quality to do well. Definitely. If he is doing well, why not? But as I say there is still some time before Liverpool and a couple of days in the transfer market."
Jaissle also noted that Miley's brother Lewis can play in the same position, adding: "Let's see what happens until Liverpool."
Newcastle are also trying to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich. Jaissle, who was frustrated by transfer questions, said: "There will be some changes for sure (in the transfer market). It's important there something done, and I hope we see it soon."
