Moses Itauma will look to make heavyweight boxing history when he clashes with Filip Hrgovic in London tonight. The formidable and undefeated Chatham southpaw will become the youngest-ever British champion in the sport’s blue-riband division if he defeats Croatia’s 2016 Olympic bronze medallist at the O2 Arena.
History in the making
Not only that, Itauma would also follow Mike Tyson - who achieved the feat aged 20 in November 1986, defeating Trevor Berbick for WBC honours - as the second-youngest heavyweight title-holder in history at the age of just 21. Itauma and Hrgovic are competing for the IBF belt that has been vacant since former undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk relinquished all of his gold earlier this summer.
Weigh-in chaos
There is plenty of simmering hostility between the pair, with tempers boiling over during Friday’s explosive ceremonial weigh-in held at Old Spitalfields Market. More angry words and insults were exchanged during another tense face-off, before Hrgovic then posed for the cameras and was shoved in the back and off stage by Itauma. Hrgovic responded with a slap to the face of his rival during chaotic scenes, with the fighters having to be quickly separated by security.
Records and form
Itauma carries an unblemished 14-0 record into Saturday’s main event, having ruthlessly dispatched of Dillian Whyte in the first round last summer before dominating Jermaine Franklin in Manchester in March. Hrgovic’s only professional career loss to date was against Daniel Dubois on the inaugural Queensberry vs Matchroom 5v5 card in Riyadh in 2024, since when he has reeled off three straight wins over British opponents in Joe Joyce, David Adeleye and Dave Allen. He is a clear underdog against the destructive Itauma, who is heavily fancied to ace his toughest test to date and join Dubois as a reigning world heavyweight champion.
