Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz both scored in the first half as Liverpool's new attacking duo showed encouraging signs, but defensive frailties led to a 3-2 defeat to Monaco in a pre-season friendly at Anfield on Sunday.
Isak and Wirtz deliver promising display
The £241m pair, who are the club's two most expensive signings, gave new head coach Andoni Iraola plenty of positives in his first home game in charge. Isak controlled a pass from Ryan Gravenberch before turning and finishing past goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, while Wirtz doubled the lead from a goalmouth scramble. Isak tried to claim the second goal, but the dubious goals panel may have to decide.
The duo struggled last season under Arne Slot, with Isak missing four months due to a broken leg and Wirtz not meeting expectations. However, they showed flashes of their potential against Monaco, and their partnership could be crucial for Iraola this season.
Defensive issues cost Liverpool again
Monaco pulled one back before half-time when Aleksandr Golovin converted a penalty after a foul by Virgil van Dijk. After the break, Mika Biereth equalised, and substitute Paris Brunner headed in the winner from a corner late on. It was the second consecutive friendly in which Liverpool threw away a two-goal lead.
The Reds are short of centre-backs, and the impending arrival of Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona is expected to provide some relief. However, more signings are likely needed to strengthen the squad.
Ngumoha impresses again
Teenager Rio Ngumoha, who is not yet 18, continued to impress on the right side, drawing praise from the Anfield crowd. He appears set to play a significant role under Iraola this season.
Despite the defeat, there were signs of progress under the new head coach, but the biggest improvements are expected to come from the transfer market, with sporting director Richard Hughes under pressure to deliver.
