FIFA Unveils New National Anthem Ceremony for 2026 World Cup

FIFA has announced a revamped pre-match ceremony for the 2026 World Cup, where every player in the matchday squad will sing the national anthems. The new format moves all players and referees to the centre circle, creating a moment of unity and pride, according to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Infantino stated: “Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone in the stadium.” The ceremony will also include extra-large country flag banners covering nearly half the pitch, inspired by NFL traditions.

The 360-degree concept aims to enhance the experience for every seat in the stadium, with player entry arches, handheld flags, and on-pitch elements. Traditional rituals like handshakes, team photos, and the coin toss will remain. Later tournament matches may feature coloured smoke or pyrotechnics.
