Lee Nicholls was the hero as Huddersfield Town defeated Leicester City 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Carabao Cup first round at the Accu Stadium. The League One side twice came from behind to force the shootout, with Dan Vost and Cameron Ashia scoring crucial equalisers.
Leicester took the lead nine minutes into the second half through Hamza Choudhury, who smashed a half-cleared ball into the top corner. Huddersfield responded when Dion Charles's penalty was saved, but Vost headed home the rebound for his first senior goal. The Championship side restored their lead three minutes later through Harry Winks, only for Ashia to curl in a stunning equaliser.
In the shootout, Nicholls saved efforts from Jordan Ayew and Kasey McAteer, while Bilal El Khannouss hit a post, securing a 3-2 victory for the Terriers. Huddersfield will travel to Sunderland in the second round.
Elsewhere, Birmingham City beat Sheffield United 2-1 thanks to Jay Stansfield's late winner, while Sheffield Wednesday progressed past Bolton Wanderers 4-2 on penalties. Barnsley also won a shootout, beating Fleetwood Town 5-4 after a 2-2 draw.
