Liverpool take on Como twice today in their final pre-season friendlies of the summer. The Reds will play one game behind closed doors at Anfield, before opening up the terraces later on in the evening for supporters to cheer their heroes on in their final run-out before the start of the Premier League season.
New manager and squad concerns
The Merseysiders are now under the watchful eye of Andoni Iraola, the former Bournemouth manager, but they are lacking in squad depth as the big kick off gets closer and closer. They have had to contend with the departures of both Ibrahima Konate and Mohamed Salah on free transfers, while Andy Robertson also left for Tottenham.
Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitke are also long-term injury absentees in a further blow to Iraola, who has only been able to welcome two senior signings into his squad this summer. They are Spanish winger Victor Munoz, poached from under the nose of Newcastle, and Ronald Araujo, landed on loan from Barcelona to bolster the central defensive ranks.
Defensive issues ahead of Como double-header
That particular position has posed a problem for the Reds, with Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez all injury concerns ahead of these two matches. As such, it had left Virgil van Dijk as the only senior centre-half in the first-team fold.
Now, they take on Cesc Fabregas' Como, who took Arsenal to a penalty shootout last weekend on their visit to the Emirates Stadium.
