High School Senior Mason Howell Set for Dream Masters Debut Alongside Rory McIlroy
When the Masters Tournament commences at Augusta National on Thursday afternoon, one competitor will be experiencing a particularly extraordinary moment. Eighteen-year-old amateur Mason Howell, still a high school senior, has been grouped with defending champion Rory McIlroy and fellow professional Cameron Young for the first two rounds of the prestigious event.
A Prestigious Honour Earned Through Victory
Howell's remarkable opportunity stems from his victory at the US Amateur championship, an achievement that places him among legendary company including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Phil Mickelson. This triumph automatically secures an invitation to compete at the Masters, with the tradition of pairing the reigning US Amateur champion with the defending Masters champion ensuring Howell will share the course with his idol.
"I'll be super excited but at the same time I'll be super nervous," Howell admitted on Monday. "I think just controlling my emotions and sticking to my game plan and just having fun. Rory was one of my idols growing up, so it'll be a super special moment for me."
A Full-Circle Moment with a Childhood Hero
The young golfer has long expressed admiration for McIlroy, recalling a meaningful encounter at the 2016 Tour Championship where the five-time major winner gifted him a golf ball. "I went to watch and he gave me his golf ball on like the 4th hole, and I've kept it ever since, so it'll be kind of a full-circle moment," Howell told GOLF magazine. "He was like my favorite player growing up."
Howell explained that while many young golfers idolize Tiger Woods, McIlroy was always his personal inspiration. "Some people say, like, who do they look up to? Like Tiger and people like that. Rory was my guy because he was the best golfer for me growing up."
Managing Nerves and Embracing the Experience
The Georgia-committed schoolboy acknowledges the challenge ahead but remains focused on his approach. "It's kind of a lot to handle," Howell said of the Masters experience. "It's a long week, but I'm keeping it to nine holes a day, focusing on myself, and then whenever Thursday comes, I know I'll be pretty nervous but excited at the same time."
Howell's strategy involves maintaining perspective and enjoyment throughout the tournament. "If I keep a smile on my face, I think the rest will take care of itself. Just putting four good rounds together. That's kind of a good goal for me, and I think soaking it all in and putting a smile on my face."
Tournament Schedule and Notable Groupings
Howell's Masters journey will begin at 3:31 PM UK time on Thursday afternoon. Elsewhere in the field, tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler is scheduled in the penultimate group at 18:44, playing alongside fellow American Gary Woodland and Scottish golfer Robert MacIntyre.
The action will commence with ceremonial starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tom Watson, followed by the opening pairing of America's John Keefer and China's Li Haotong at 12:40 PM.
