Hemming and Van Leeuwen Reflect on Disappointing All England Exit
Callum Hemming and Estelle van Leeuwen expressed frustration over fundamental errors that led to their defeat at the YONEX All England 2026 badminton tournament. The English mixed doubles pairing, hailing from Milton Keynes, fell to a 21-14, 21-12 loss against the experienced Malaysian duo Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie in the first round of their home event.
Early Promise Fades as Rhythm Eludes English Pair
Despite seizing an early 7-2 lead in the opening game, Hemming and Van Leeuwen struggled to maintain momentum against the world number 11-ranked opponents. The Malaysian pair's superior speed and consistency proved challenging, with the English shuttlers conceding multiple five-point runs. Hemming acknowledged the tactical shortcomings, stating that they failed to adapt effectively after a strong start.
"We started off quite well, but they reacted better, and we didn't respond well to that," Hemming explained. "We lacked a solid rhythm in our rallies today. When exchanges lengthened, our quality dipped, and we made too many easy mistakes, allowing them to gain confidence. Giving a top pair like that confidence makes the job much harder."
Van Leeuwen Highlights Need for Higher Standards
In the second game, Van Leeuwen faced difficulties finding her range in the expansive Utilita Arena, and the pair never led. However, they remained competitive, nearly levelling the match at one point. Van Leeuwen emphasised the inconsistency in their performance, noting brief spells of good play undermined by unforced errors.
"We didn't find any rhythm today," Van Leeuwen said. "We'd have a good two or three points, then they'd string together four or five, or we'd make simple errors. You can't do that against such a good pair—they won't give you free points, and we gave them far too many. It shows the level we need to work towards."
Looking Ahead to Swiss Open and Recovery from Injury
The defeat marks a setback, but the pair remain optimistic as they prepare for the Swiss Open next week. Van Leeuwen is continuing her return from a back injury, which has impacted their winter training regimen. Both players expressed determination to improve with the support of their coaching team.
"We're feeling good, though gutted we didn't play our best at home with a home crowd," Van Leeuwen added. "But we can still go to the Swiss Open and deliver a strong performance against another top pair. We have good coaches now and believe we can do well, so we'll keep working towards it."
The YONEX All England is a prestigious tournament that all players aspire to win, and Hemming and Van Leeuwen's experience underscores the high standards required at the elite level of badminton.
