Heidenheim produced a dramatic late turnaround to beat Union Berlin 2-1, with two stoppage-time goals from substitutes Stefan Schimmer and Jan Schöppner. The result lifts Frank Schmidt's side out of the bottom two, while Union's winless run against Heidenheim continues.
The visitors were trailing until the 90th minute, but Schimmer equalised from Omar Haktab Traoré's cross before Schöppner headed home a corner deep into added time. It was a bitter repeat for Union, who had conceded a last-gasp winner to Harry Kane in their previous home game.
Heidenheim's victory was made even more valuable by results elsewhere. Bayern Munich scored twice in stoppage time to draw with St Pauli, leaving the latter with nine consecutive league defeats. Mainz, meanwhile, suffered a 4-0 thrashing at Freiburg to drop to the bottom of the table.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert refused to give unequivocal backing to coach Bo Henriksen after the defeat. 'We will discuss his position calmly,' Bungert told DAZN. 'After such a game and our league position, the situation is terrible. We will examine every aspect.'
Henriksen had rescued Mainz from relegation after taking over in February 2024 and led them to sixth place last season. However, a poor domestic run, capped by Sunday's loss, has raised doubts about his future.
