Hearts vs Hibs gets bizarre shoutout on Brazilian TV

The Edinburgh derby received an unexpected mention on Brazilian television ahead of Sunday's Premier Sports Cup semi-final between Hearts and Hibernian at Hampden.

During a live broadcast of the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A clash between Rio rivals Flamengo and Vasco de Gama, commentator Anthony Wells and co-commentator Joao Monteiro turned their attention to the meeting of the Scottish capital clubs.

Shoutout to Edinburgh viewer

The pair gave a shoutout to an Edinburgh-based viewer named Derek Hope, who was watching from Scotland.

Wells said: "Quick shoutout to Derek, Derek Hope is also joining us from Scotland, but from Edinburg [sic], the capital."

Monteiro added: "We'll have Hearts and Hibernian, the two rivals from Edinburg [sic], playing each other on the semi-finals of the Scotland Cup [sic] on Sunday."

Sympathy for Hearts' title heartbreak

The conversation also touched on Hearts' final-day Premiership title heartbreak last season, which was the subject of a recent Copa 90 documentary.

Wells said: "Heart-breaking for Hearts last season, they were so close. All they had to do was just tie the game, right? And they ended up losing to Celtic. I watched a documentary recently just, aw you wish, you kinda wish they'd just won the league."

Monteiro responded: "Yeah, exactly. Difficult not to root for them, such a great season they had."

Match details and history

Both Edinburgh clubs will head to Hampden on Sunday with a place in the final against either Rangers or Aberdeen at stake.

History favours Hearts, who have never lost to their city rivals at the national stadium. Across three Scottish Cup semi-finals and a Scottish Cup Final over the last two decades, the Jambos have won by an aggregate score of 13-3.

Hibs earned their first point under new boss Marink Reedijk in midweek, but go into the semi-final as underdogs.

In the match being broadcast, Flamengo ran out 4-1 winners away at their rivals' Sao Januario stadium, with doubles from former Fiorentina striker Pedro dos Santos and former Atletico Madrid winger Samuel Lino.
