Harvey Elliott could secure a fourth Liverpool loan move this season, as his temporary spell at Valencia might be cut short. The Spanish club are in crisis, sitting in the La Liga relegation zone, with Elliott sent off in their most recent defeat.
That was only his sixth appearance of the season, all coming off the bench after a difficult start following concerns over his fitness. Elliott has barely played senior football over the last 18 months; his spell at Aston Villa last season ended badly.
Loan rules and a possible return
Because he played for the Reds in a competitive game earlier in that campaign, he was unable to return to Anfield mid-season and be sent back out on loan. However, having only featured in friendlies under Andoni Iraola, his latest difficult spell could end before May 2026.
That scenario is what Julian Burgos, a Valencia expert, seemingly expects, as the club attempts to reverse decisions made by the previous management, including Elliott's loan.
Valencia expert's view
Burgos told The Daily Mail: "At the moment, I don't think he has adapted... he has been a significant disappointment, especially considering he arrived with the pedigree of coming from Liverpool. It is true that he has been putting in the work over the last few weeks, and he appears to be in better physical shape."
"Honestly, if the option to terminate the loan arises, Valencia will likely pursue it. With a new sporting director and manager – compounded by the team's poor form – it seems they will look to undo many of the moves made by the previous sporting director, the Scotsman Ron Gourlay."
"They need to free up space within the salary cap to make changes to the squad, so they will likely take any opportunity to cut ties with players brought in under the previous regime."
Sending off and criticism
Elliott, who issued an apology for his sending off, is now banned for their next fixture away to Elche. The Liverpool loanee was subsequently criticised by Valencia manager Javier Aguirre following the match.
Aguirre said: "It's a ridiculous dismissal, and I told him as much. It's not his fault; the fault is mine, though I'll address it with him privately. Ultimately, the responsibility is mine, because I'm the one who decides who plays and how we play. The sending-off disrupted everything. We ended up playing an all-or-nothing, wide-open game."
Just weeks after Elliott arrived at the Mestalla Stadium, Valencia undertook a major overhaul, dismissing head coach Carlos Corberan and sporting director Ron Gourlay. The former had been instrumental in bringing Elliott to the club, yet the midfielder still featured sparingly owing to fitness concerns.
Valencia's solitary league victory since his arrival came in a match where he remained an unused substitute. This marks the second successive difficult loan spell for Elliott, with his time at Aston Villa last season amounting to just 284 minutes across all competitions. Reaching 10 Premier League appearances would have triggered a £35million purchase option, yet Unai Emery opted to leave him out of 17 matchday squads.
