Lewis Hamilton's Blunt Ferrari Radio Exchange Signals Demanding 2026 Campaign
Lewis Hamilton has already set a demanding tone for his second season with Ferrari, following a tense radio exchange with his new engineer during practice sessions in Melbourne. The seven-time world champion, now 41 years old, endured a nightmare debut campaign with the Scuderia in 2025, but his blunt communication with interim race engineer Carlo Santi speaks volumes about his ambitions for the 2026 Formula 1 season.
A Frustrating Debut Season and New Partnership
Hamilton's first year at Ferrari was marked by disappointment, as he finished sixth in the drivers' championship, a staggering 86 points behind teammate Charles Leclerc, and failed to secure a single podium finish. Throughout the 2025 campaign, he had numerous strained exchanges with his then-race engineer Riccardo Adami, who was subsequently moved to a different role within the team at the season's end.
In Australia for the opening practice sessions of the 2026 season, Hamilton was paired with Santi, who has been appointed as his interim race engineer. The Brit showed promising pace, securing second and fourth positions across the two practice sessions and was the only driver to rank in the top four in both outings. However, it was the radio communication between driver and engineer that provided a potential snapshot of their working relationship moving forward.
The Tense Radio Exchange in Detail
During the session, Hamilton requested specific feedback over the car radio, saying: "I need more feedback of where that four tenths is." Santi responded: "Two tenths in the first sector, power limited." Unhappy with this answer, Hamilton retorted: "I understand it's two tenths but where is that power limit," with Santi replying: "Power limit is between 2 and 3. Same Second sector. Same Third sector."
This still wasn't the detail Hamilton was seeking. In his quest for clarity, he frustratingly replied: "2 and 3 is not helping. Is it apex speed? Is it exit?" to which Santi responded: "It's power limit." Still not satisfied, Hamilton, who was becoming noticeably more exasperated, said: "That does not help me, mate. Is it the exit or is it the apex? I don't care about power limit."
In what marked the first indication they were making progress, the Ferrari engineer then responded "It's the apex". A more reassured and content sounding Hamilton then enquired: "Okay. Is apex too high or too low? Give me some feedback.."
Hamilton's Uncompromising Approach and Title Ambitions
This exchange highlighted the level of detail and precision Hamilton will be demanding from his race engineers throughout the 2026 campaign. Following the frustrations of last season, the British driver has made it evident that he is not settling for anything less than maximum feedback and performance as he targets a record-breaking eighth world championship title.
When asked about his ambitions for the season, Hamilton stated: "The goal is to win. That's what everyone's working towards - every team is. But that's our goal. To maximise on every opportunity, to be lean, to be hopefully fighting in the top group, hopefully in the first races. We don't really know."
He added: "Mercedes looks particularly quick, and I'm not really sure whether we have seen the full unleashed Red Bull yet, so it's really, really exciting. But I do know that, whatever the case, I feel like I've got a great group of people behind me who are head down, focused on bringing performance and really maximising from every weekend."
The early signs from Melbourne suggest that Hamilton is leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of success with Ferrari. His blunt communication style with Santi underscores a driver who is determined to extract every possible advantage as he seeks to avenge his disappointing 2025 season and challenge for the ultimate prize in Formula 1.
