Newcastle United's heavy defeat at Coventry City should serve as a major wake-up call to the Magpies squad, but manager Matthias Jaissle must be given plenty of time to get things right. That is the verdict of former United and Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann, who admits to being a big fan of his fellow countryman Jaissle.
Alarm bells after second heavy defeat
The setback at Coventry was only Newcastle's second defeat of the season, but on the back of another 4-1 defeat at Leeds United, it has set alarm bells ringing among the fanbase. Newcastle had started the season well, but the 2-1 victory over Hull City before the international break came after they resisted intense second-half pressure from the Tigers, while they had to come back from 2-0 down to earn a point against Bournemouth.
Hamann concerned by goals conceded
Hamann is concerned over the amount of goals United are shipping, and feels it is taking the players a while to adapt to Jaissle and his tactics. However, he has backed the German to get things right, provided he is given time to implement his philosophy.
“Newcastle conceding so many goals in their defeats is definitely concerning to me,” he told Betpack. “Outscoring teams in the Premier League is a difficult business, and the best way to win games is by being tight defensively, which Newcastle haven’t been very often this season. Conceding four to a newly-promoted Coventry side should be a wake-up call for Newcastle.
“I am a big fan of the manager, I think he’s going to be excellent as long as he’s given time. But they lost some key players towards the end of the transfer window and so far, it looks like they’re struggling to adapt to playing without them. They certainly didn’t replace them all with the business they did in the summer. But it’s all a process, and I expect Newcastle to improve as the season goes on.”
Bounce-back chance against Aston Villa
Newcastle have the chance to bounce back when they face Aston Villa at St James' Park on Saturday afternoon.
