Sonny Jurgensen, the Hall of Fame quarterback celebrated for his powerful arm and engaging personality, has died at the age of 91. The Washington Commanders confirmed on Friday that the team had been informed of his passing by his family.
Jurgensen joined Washington in 1964 in a surprise trade that sent Norm Snead to the Philadelphia Eagles. Over 11 seasons with the team, he set numerous franchise records, including five seasons with over 3,000 passing yards—two of which came during his time with the Eagles—in an era before rule changes opened up NFL offences.
Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983, Jurgensen remains the only Washington player to have worn the No. 9 jersey in a game. His legacy as one of the most beloved figures in Washington football history endures.
