Erling Haaland Intensifies Pace Work in Preparation for Real Madrid Showdown
Manchester City's star striker Erling Haaland is anticipated to make his comeback for the crucial Champions League encounter against Real Madrid this week. The Norwegian forward dedicated the weekend to rigorous training sessions, specifically focusing on enhancing his speed and match readiness.
Strategic Absence from FA Cup Victory
Haaland did not accompany the squad for Manchester City's FA Cup fifth-round triumph at Newcastle United on Saturday. Manager Pep Guardiola implemented a rotation strategy, opting to rest key players ahead of the European fixture. This marked the second absence in three matches for Haaland, who also sat out the previous Premier League victory at Leeds United due to a minor injury.
Guardiola explained the decision, stating, "I didn't think to let him play and I prefer him training to make a rhythm. After injury, when he drops, he always struggles a little bit to have that real, real pace." The manager emphasised the importance of allowing Haaland to rebuild his explosive speed through targeted exercises rather than risking further issues in competitive play.
Comprehensive Squad Rotation for City
The FA Cup match saw several other first-team players rested, including goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, defenders Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi, midfielder Rodri, and attacker Bernardo Silva. All remained as unused substitutes during the 3-1 win at St James' Park. Forwards Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki, along with Phil Foden, only entered the game during the latter stages, conserving energy for the upcoming Champions League fixture.
Champions League Context and Injury Updates
Manchester City will travel to the Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid. This represents their second visit to the Spanish capital this season, heightening the stakes for both clubs.
However, the match may come too soon for defender or midfielder Rico Lewis, who has been sidelined for the last four games due to an ankle issue. Guardiola provided an update, noting, "He has a problem with his ankle, a little bit swollen, but he's nearly back."
In more positive news, the City boss expressed optimism regarding the potential returns of midfielder Mateo Kovacic and defender Josko Gvardiol before the season concludes. Kovacic, who has managed only two appearances this term because of an ankle injury, has resumed training. Guardiola remarked, "Great news, finally he's back training for the last three or four training sessions. Still, his condition needs time. Maybe he can give us good quality time until the end of the season."
Regarding Gvardiol, who suffered a broken leg in January, Guardiola added, "There's a bit longer still. I hope so (he'll return) but I don't know when." These developments highlight the ongoing management of player fitness as Manchester City navigates multiple competitions.
