Erling Haaland has claimed Arsenal defender Gabriel was fortunate to avoid a red card after their clash during Manchester City's 2-1 victory at the Etihad on Sunday. The win reduced Arsenal's lead at the top of the Premier League to three points, with City holding a game in hand.
The incident occurred when Haaland and Gabriel went head-to-head, with the Brazilian appearing to thrust his forehead forward. Referee Anthony Taylor issued yellow cards to both players, and VAR did not intervene. Haaland suggested that had he fallen to the ground, Gabriel might have been sent off.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Haaland said: 'If I fell on the floor there, which I will not do unless someone really attacks me, then it would maybe be red card. I'm not sure, I haven't seen the situation. It is what it is, I will not fall on the floor.'
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville expressed disbelief that Gabriel remained on the pitch, stating: 'The moment you throw it forward you get a red. I can’t believe that’s not a red to be honest.' Former Premier League referee Mike Dean added: 'Gabriel is very lucky not to be sent off. I think he’s very lucky, very lucky indeed.'
