Basketball legend Gregg Popovich has made his first significant public appearance in months, attending an Austin Spurs G-League game in Texas. The sighting comes almost a year after the former San Antonio Spurs head coach endured a series of serious health incidents that raised considerable concern among the basketball community.
A Welcome Return to the Court
Video footage emerged on Friday showing the 76-year-old at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas, where he watched the Spurs' G-League affiliate suffer a 112-96 defeat to the Capital City Go-Go. The clip, which circulated widely on social media, captured Popovich using a walking stick as he moved across the court area.
The five-time NBA champion received a rousing reception from the Texas crowd, waving appreciatively to supporters. He took time to shake hands with several young fans and posed for photographs, demonstrating his enduring connection with the basketball community. Some observers even suggested he provided coaching assistance to the Spurs during the first half of the contest.
Previous Health Challenges
Popovich's appearance marks his most notable public sighting since May, when he attended a press conference to introduce his replacement, Mitch Johnson. During that event, he wore a shirt reading 'El Jefe' and 'Senor Popovich' while declaring his transition from coaching to his current role as president of basketball operations.
Despite stating his health was improving at that time, concerning details about his condition emerged later that same month. A 911 call from April 15 revealed that Popovich had been 'barely responding' at Ruth's Chris Steak House in San Antonio, requiring emergency hospital transport.
This restaurant incident occurred just six months after the coaching icon suffered a mild stroke before a game in November 2024. Disturbing footage subsequently surfaced showing the NBA's all-time winningest coach being placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance after reportedly fainting.
Recovery Progress Evident
The 911 caller, describing Popovich as a 'guest,' initially reported him as 'non-responding' before amending this to 'barely responding.' The caller later noted improvement, stating: 'Ok. He's responding now. He passed out for a little bit.'
Popovich's nearly three-decade tenure as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs established him as one of basketball's most respected figures. His stepping away from the bench in May to assume front office responsibilities marked the end of an era for the franchise.
Friday's G-League appearance, while showing the coach using mobility assistance, represents a positive milestone in his recovery journey. The warm reception from fans underscores the deep affection and respect the basketball world holds for this legendary figure as he continues his health rehabilitation.
