Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he has not spoken to Mason Greenwood about a potential England return, after the Marseille striker turned down a Jamaica call-up. The England manager said the 23-year-old was not in his plans for the current squad, despite Greenwood being eligible for the Three Lions.
Speaking about the former Manchester United forward, Tuchel said: "I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team." He added: "I don't rule anything out but he is no priority at the moment."
Greenwood last featured for England five years ago, when he was sent home from Iceland in disgrace after breaking Covid rules with Phil Foden by inviting two women to the team hotel. In October 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. All charges were dropped in February 2023.
Jamaica head coach Steve McClaren revealed that Greenwood, who has one England cap, had declined a call-up after initially appearing set to switch allegiance through his father's parentage. McClaren said: "We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp but in a conversation with his family, he's not going to commit at this time to anybody." He admitted disappointment, but added: "We will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica."
