Mason Greenwood has formally switched his international allegiance to Jamaica, bringing an end to his association with England. The 22-year-old forward has completed the necessary paperwork to represent the Caribbean nation, for whom he qualifies through his father, who was born in Jamaica.
The decision comes after the Football Association made clear that Greenwood would not be considered for England selection again. The former Manchester United player earned his only senior cap in September 2020, coming on against Iceland before his 21st birthday, a factor that allowed him to change countries under FIFA rules.
Greenwood's England career was effectively ended after he was suspended by Manchester United in 2022 following charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. He denied the charges, which were later dropped, but left United permanently for Marseille last summer after a loan spell at Getafe in Spain.
Despite strong performances in Ligue 1, where he is currently the division's leading scorer with 12 goals, the England setup reportedly viewed his recall as too risky due to negative publicity. He will now link up with Jamaica's head coach Steve McClaren, the former Manchester United assistant manager, although he will have to wait for his debut as Marseille declined to release him for friendlies next month. He is expected to be named in the squad for the first time in June.
Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi praised Greenwood after his arrival, saying: "He's just exceptional. He's a great player and it shows. I'm happy to see him score to end all the controversy in the media."
