VAR Protocol to Include Second Yellow Cards After Controversial Newcastle Red Card

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has announced an expansion of the VAR protocol to include second yellow cards from next season, following a contentious red card in Newcastle United's win over Manchester United.

In Wednesday's match, Newcastle's Jacob Ramsey was sent off by referee Peter Bankes after receiving a second yellow card for simulation. The decision was met with jeers from the crowd, especially after Manchester United equalised in the eighth minute of first-half stoppage time, which had been allocated just three minutes.

Under the new IFAB rules, the Ramsey incident could have been reviewed and potentially overturned, allowing Newcastle to keep a full side. The Magpies have been on the receiving end of controversial decisions this season, including a denied penalty against Chelsea and a missed handball in an FA Cup win over Aston Villa.

Despite the red card, Newcastle secured a 2-1 victory thanks to a last-minute goal from Will Osula, keeping their Premier League season alive. Bankes faced further criticism after the match as he left the pitch to a chorus of jeers.
