Steven Gerrard has tipped Dominik Szoboszlai as a future Liverpool captain after the Hungarian starred in the Reds' 4-0 Champions League win over Galatasaray. The former Liverpool captain urged manager Arne Slot to keep Szoboszlai in midfield, calling it his 'proper position'.
Szoboszlai opened the scoring from a corner routine, with further goals from Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah sealing the quarter-final tie against Paris Saint-Germain. The 25-year-old has been Liverpool's most consistent performer this season, prompting Salah to recently call him one of the world's best players.
'I like his mentality. He's evolved and grown a lot since becoming a Liverpool player,' Gerrard told TNT Sports. 'There's a potential captain in there. The way he's playing, his consistency and mentality – I love that about him.'
Gerrard added: 'He's flying at the moment. He's full of confidence. Keep him in his proper position and let him flourish. He could have had a hat-trick tonight; his ball striking is phenomenal.'
Szoboszlai said after the match: 'Today we showed the right direction. It's a good step forward – quarter-finals for the first time in my life. We move on.'
