Julian Nagelsmann faces mounting pressure as Germany prepare for the World Cup, with the 'shadow of Jurgen Klopp' hanging over the campaign. Despite leading a youthful squad to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, recent Nations League defeats and an unconvincing qualification campaign have dampened optimism.
Former Norwegian footballer and podcast host Marcus Fjortoft said Nagelsmann has lost some of the enthusiasm he generated after taking over in 2023. 'He came in with authority, but after defeats to Portugal and France, the goodwill got tapped out,' Fjortoft said. He predicted a quarter-final exit as a realistic target.
The availability of Jurgen Klopp, currently in a strategic role at Red Bull, adds to the pressure. 'There is this inevitability, this romance in the idea of Klopp taking over Germany,' Fjortoft said. 'Nagelsmann has failed to capture that imagination. It's hard when you compare yourself to as charismatic a figure as Klopp.'
Germany's squad includes veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, 40, who came out of international retirement, and young talents like 18-year-old Lennart Karl, who broke records at Bayern this season. Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz are key attacking threats, while Aleksandar Pavlovic and Felix Nemcha provide youthful depth.
Fjortoft dismissed concerns over Wirtz's form after his £115 million move to Liverpool, saying 'he's a human nonetheless' and will thrive on the big stage. Germany face a tough group but remain four-time world champions, with expectations cautiously optimistic.
