Gary Neville's Media Group Acquires Mark Goldbridge's YouTube Football Channels

In an exclusive development, Gary Neville's sports media group, The Overlap, has secured the acquisition of two prominent YouTube channels owned by the controversial yet highly popular football content creator, Mark Goldbridge. The deal, understood to be valued at a seven-figure sum, brings Goldbridge's channels, The United Stand and That's Football, under The Overlap's umbrella, adding a combined 3.7 million subscribers to its portfolio.

Unlikely Partnership Forges Ahead

This acquisition may come as a surprise to many, given Neville's past criticisms of "those bloody YouTubers" and Goldbridge's often explosive, negative outbursts about Manchester United, which have garnered both criticism and a massive following. Neville, a former Manchester United defender, acknowledged this irony, recalling a time when he declined to invite Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent Di Cesare, onto The Overlap. However, he emphasized that neither party holds grudges, stating they do not take themselves too seriously despite previous disagreements.

Expanding Football Content Horizons

The Overlap, co-founded by Neville in 2021, aims to capitalize on the growing appetite for football punditry and reaction content beyond live match coverage. Neville described the goal as creating a group that delivers "direct, personality-led content" to fans. While live football remains the pinnacle, The Overlap targets the "noise segment"—the constant discussions, debates, and opinions surrounding football during off-periods, which fans crave.

With this acquisition, The Overlap plans to enhance its specialist coverage of major clubs across Europe. The United Stand, with 2.26 million subscribers, is the largest Manchester United fan channel on YouTube, while That's Football, with 1.46 million subscribers, covers the Premier League and broader football topics. New formats will be introduced, including Stick to United, featuring former players and journalists, and The Daily United, a daily news show for Manchester United fans. That's Football will be relaunched and rebranded as a daily football news and podcast channel.

Strategic Growth and Future Ambitions

This marks The Overlap's first acquisition since Global, a major European commercial radio company, took a majority stake in January, highlighting YouTube's increasing influence in sports broadcasting. Neville expressed that this is "the first acquisition of hopefully a few more," with plans to build "brilliant channels for big clubs in this country and around Europe." He assured that Goldbridge's channels will retain their core appeal while adding value through insights from ex-footballers and journalists.

The move will bring The Overlap's total subscriber count to approximately 6 million across its channels, excluding audio content, as it strives for television-standard production quality. Goldbridge reflected on the deal, stating his pride in building these channels over the past decade and seeing The Overlap's ambition and resources as key to taking his content to the next level.
