Gary Moore retires, hands reins to sons Jamie and Josh

Gary Moore has announced his retirement from training, bringing an end to a successful 35-year career in jumps and on the Flat. Moore, 70, who has trained in a partnership with son Josh since 2024, broke the news after the stable had secured a double at Brighton with Thundering Breeze and Gone Rogue.

A family affair at the track

Gary Moore grew up in Brighton where his father Charlie had a stable adjacent to the track and was a jump jockey before taking out a licence on his own in Epsom. He has been a fixture in the racing world, not only through major victories both in National Hunt and Flat racing, but also as the father of world renowned Flat jockey Ryan, jump jockeys Jamie and Josh and broadcaster Hayley Moore.

Karinga Bay secured multiple Group-race triumphs on the Flat in Germany back in 1993, while his finest jumps horse was the beloved Sire De Grugy, who claimed the 2014 Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival alongside two Tingle Creeks, two Celebration Chases, the Desert Orchid Chase and the Clarence House.

Time for the next generation

Moore, whose yard is based near Horsham, West Sussex, said: "I just feel I'm getting old and Jamie works so hard with Josh and a younger person will do the job a bit better than what we've been doing just recently. I felt now is the time for Jamie to add his bit to it, which we need.

"Jamie and Josh have been there with me all the time. I'm 70 years of age now and I feel it's about time. It won't make no difference to anybody or anything. I'll still be in the yard. Instead of them working for me, I'll be working for them. I'll do the best I can for them."

He continued: "I've been training for 35 years now and have enjoyed every minute of it. If it wasn't for the two boys I'd still carry on. You've got to give everybody a chance in this game, it's a young man's game as far as I'm concerned. I don't like travelling to the races every day of the week, I'd prefer to be at home and I just felt now was the time to give the boys a chance.

What's next

Jamie and Josh Moore have their first entries at Fontwell and Newmarket next Wednesday.
