The Lineker Brothers' 17-Year Estrangement Finally Ends

Gary Lineker, the celebrated football pundit and former England captain, has rekindled his relationship with his younger brother Wayne after a staggering 17-year feud. The estrangement, which saw the siblings barely communicate for nearly two decades, came to an end last summer following family weddings that forced a reconciliation.

A Rift Sparked by Personal Relationships

The origins of the rift remain somewhat unclear, but it has been widely reported that tensions began in 2008 when Gary started seeing Danielle Bux, whom he later married in 2009. Wayne Lineker, the Ibiza nightclub mogul, has previously pointed to this relationship as the catalyst for the fallout.

"In my opinion, Danielle cost me my relationship with my brother," Wayne stated in past interviews. "Sadly Gary is no longer a part of my life. They came to Ibiza in August 2008 and it was really awkward. I didn't spark with Danielle and our relationship was cold."

The situation worsened when Wayne's then-partner, Ana Tanaka, was excluded from Gary and Danielle's wedding guest list in 2009. Wayne took a principled stance, refusing to attend without his girlfriend of a year-and-a-half. Attempts at reconciliation, including a brief phone call on Gary's 50th birthday, proved unsuccessful at the time.

Contrasting Careers and Personalities

While Gary Lineker rose to fame as a football legend, captaining England and becoming the face of BBC's Match of the Day, his younger brother carved out his own reputation in the nightlife industry. Wayne established successful venues in Spanish hotspots like Magaluf and Ibiza, building the popular O Beach brand.

Despite their different paths to prominence, Wayne has consistently denied any jealousy between them. "There was never one millimetre of jealousy," he emphasized. "I grew up with him getting better and better... I was so honoured to be his brother. It was a massive part of my life."

The brothers acknowledge their contrasting personalities. "We're two different people, we're chalk and cheese," Wayne explained on the UNTAPPED podcast. "He's reserved, laid back, intelligent, whereas I'm an old market-trader, 'Jack The Lad' and a bit of banter about me."

The Turning Point: Family Weddings

The breakthrough came last summer when both Wayne's daughter and Gary's son got married. These family events necessitated their presence and interaction, ultimately leading to reconciliation.

"My daughters and my nephews' wedding this year, so we've had two; we both needed to be there," Wayne revealed. "That was the turning point. That's how it got there. It's been really nice."

Wayne described their interaction at his nephew's wedding in Ibiza as surprisingly natural. "It was like we never fell out," he recalled. "We actually never did fall out — it was just something that happened which I won't speak about."

Personal Challenges and Moving Forward

Wayne Lineker has recently opened up about his personal struggles, including battles with alcohol and drugs that led to health scares. He has since undergone rehab and embarked on a fitness program to improve his health after years of partying while building his business empire.

The reconciliation comes at a significant time for both brothers. Gary continues his successful broadcasting career, while Wayne focuses on his health and business ventures. Their renewed relationship marks the end of a lengthy period of estrangement that spanned most of two decades.

"We're back to being nice, friendly brothers again, which is nice, it's lovely," Wayne concluded, expressing optimism about their future relationship.
