Alejandro Garnacho has hit back at his critics with a two-word response after struggling for game time under Unai Emery. The Argentinian says he is 'ready now' after netting twice for Aston Villa in their international break friendlies.
The forward, who arrived at Villa from Chelsea in the summer, has played just 31 minutes this campaign and was left as an unused substitute in the previous two matches against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.
Two goals in two friendlies
Throughout the extended international break, Unai Emery's squad have faced two opponents to maintain fitness levels for their non-international players. Last week, they defeated Championship outfit Southampton 1-0, with Garnacho finding the net for the first time since joining the club.
He continued to show his eye for goal in Spain on Friday evening with another strike against Sevilla. It's a perfect response from Garnacho, who was recently accused of being 'finished' by some supporters online.
Villa claimed the Antonio Puerta Trophy with a 3-1 triumph, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis making his maiden start since arriving from Southampton. Isaac Romero broke the deadlock for the La Liga outfit, but Ross Barkley levelled matters. Garnacho fired Villa in front just eight minutes afterwards before Max Jenner sealed a third.
Instagram message and Emery's verdict
After the productive evening in Spain, Garnacho turned to Instagram to share an upbeat message ahead of domestic football resuming next weekend. Alongside a photograph of him in action, he wrote: "2 test, 2 goals. Ready now!"
Following the former Manchester United winger's absence from the pitch during the Carabao Cup victory over Coventry City, Emery emphasised that Garnacho needs to put in the effort to earn his place in the side this season.
"[He has to] continue working," the Villa boss said. "Work, work, train, work. When he can have minutes to play, try and play well.
"He is progressing, but we have players in front of him now. George [Hemmings] is playing fantastic. Alysson is also understanding things well and is giving us things I want.
"[Ibrahim] Mbaye also responded well. We want a competitive team and players to compete in the style we have.
"Garnacho is a little bit behind, because of some circumstances we had in pre-season. It is time to be patient for the time he needs."
