Garang Kuol Seals Sparta Prague Loan Move For World Cup Push

Garang Kuol, the Australian wonder kid who nearly became a hero at the 2022 World Cup, has joined Sparta Prague on loan as he bids to reignite his career and secure a place at the 2026 tournament. The 21-year-old forward, who became the youngest player to appear in a World Cup knockout stage since Pelé in 1958, has endured a nomadic spell in Europe since signing for Newcastle United in January 2023.

Kuol's journey began in Egypt, where his family fled from South Sudan before settling in Australia. He rose to prominence at Central Coast Mariners, making his debut in May 2022 and earning an international cap by September. His raw pace and low centre of gravity caught the eye of Newcastle, but the move to Tyneside proved challenging. He was quickly loaned to Hearts in Scotland, where he managed just one goal in limited minutes, followed by a stint at Dutch side FC Volendam, who were relegated from the Eredivisie.

Despite setbacks, those close to Kuol have seen resilience. Ben Dawson, a former Newcastle youth coach now at Brøndby, noted Kuol's intelligence and desire to improve. 'He has that little bit of edge, that little bit of individuality which generally is the difference between the ones who don’t quite achieve what they should, and the ones who go on to fulfil their potential,' Dawson said. Kuol has made eight appearances for Sparta Prague so far, accumulating 203 first-team minutes.

Kuol's brother Alou, who also played for Central Coast Mariners, had urged the club to sign him, saying, 'He’s going to be better than me.' Now, with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Kuol hopes to recapture the form that made him a sensation. 'He has remembered what he is all about,' a source close to the player said, suggesting the loan move could be the catalyst for a long-awaited breakthrough.
