The top seed in the men's singles was beaten 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 by the Argentine qualifier, who later expressed sympathy for Sinner's cramping issues.
Cerúndolo, ranked 103rd in the world, said he felt bad for Sinner but was delighted with the win. 'I was super happy inside,' he told TNT Sports. 'Really glad for the win, I feel bad for him cramping up, it's not something you want for any player.' He will face his brother Francisco in the next round.
In the women's draw, defending champion Coco Gauff defeated Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2 in a tough physical match. Gauff praised Sherif's resilience and said she was just having fun on court, despite the high expectations. She will face either Katie Boulter or Anastasia Potapova in the third round.
Aryna Sabalenka, the No. 1 seed, overcame a spirited challenge from Elsa Jacquemot to win 7-5, 6-2. Sabalenka saved multiple set points in the first set before dominating the second. Elsewhere, Felix Auger-Aliassime came from a set down to lead Burruchaga 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, while Madison Keys advanced with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ruzic.
