Manchester City have completed their pre-season tour to Asia under new manager Enzo Maresca, with several players making a strong impression. The tour, which included stops in Hong Kong and Seoul, was not only a key part of the club's commercial strategy but also the first real opportunity for players to impress following Pep Guardiola's departure in May.
With many of City's top stars absent due to their World Cup commitments, more than 30 players were given the chance to showcase their abilities over the past fortnight. Maresca quickly implemented his ideas in training, expecting his patterns to be executed in the three matches, while transfer business continued behind the scenes.
Antoine Semenyo Shines
Antoine Semenyo was arguably the standout performer on tour. He told reporters in Hong Kong that his first thought upon hearing of Maresca's appointment was how high the wingers played at Chelsea and his hope that it would be the same at City. That hope has been realized, as Semenyo consistently attacked full-backs from both flanks, producing goals and assists throughout the friendlies.
Jeremy Doku's return to action this week will add competition, but if City can get the two in tandem, they could be formidable. Semenyo's knack for goals made him an important player in January, and he looks set to continue in a pivotal role under Maresca.
Divin Mubama's Resurgence
Divin Mubama scored two goals in his first two friendlies and nearly added a third against Atletico Madrid, only to be denied by a good save. After a difficult season at Stoke, where he was even booed by his own fans, Mubama has reminded everyone of his promise with his performances in Asia.
Having earned starts ahead of Divine Mukasa, Mubama's displays have attracted interest from Southampton, who are looking to push for promotion back to the Premier League. A move there could be excellent for Mubama if he can find his goalscoring rhythm.
Donnarumma's Position Strengthened
Gianluigi Donnarumma had a relatively quiet tour, playing in all three friendlies without much to do. However, his position as undisputed No.1 has been strengthened by events elsewhere. James Trafford, who had been a key player in City's domestic cup successes, has been sold permanently to Leeds, and his replacement, Geronimo Rulli, is not a homegrown player, reducing the clamour for his inclusion.
Ryan McAidoo's Potential
Ryan McAidoo played only one half of football on the tour but made a lasting impression. Against Inter, who were ahead in their preparations, McAidoo tormented defenders and came close to scoring. A shoulder injury ruled him out of the final two games, but he could be fit for the Community Shield.
New signing Jeremy Monga expressed hope of staying with the first team squad, and McAidoo, having already done that last season, looks set for more minutes given the prominence of wingers under Maresca. A loan in a very good league remains an alternative, but staying at City is the romantic option.
