Liverpool's new manager Andoni Iraola needs to make several key signings to restore the team to Premier League title contention after a disappointing fifth-place finish last season. The squad is understocked and unbalanced, with injuries and departures leaving gaps in defence, midfield, and attack.
Squad Depleted by Departures and Injuries
Last season, Liverpool spent heavily but failed to replace key players. The British transfer record was broken twice with the signings of Florian Wirtz (£116m) and Alexander Isak (£125m), while Hugo Ekitike (£79m), Milos Kerkez (£40m), and Jeremie Frimpong (£29m) also arrived. However, £262m was recouped in sales, and crucial players like Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Trent Alexander-Arnold left without adequate replacements.
Defensive issues are acute: Virgil van Dijk, now 35, played 55 games last season; Joe Gomez is injury-prone; and young defenders like Giovanni Leoni are recovering from serious injuries. At right-back, Conor Bradley is out with a major knee injury, and Jeremie Frimpong has struggled with fitness.
Targets to Fill the Gaps
Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa is a prime target to bolster the defence. The 28-year-old England international is versatile, homegrown, and can play both centre-back and right-back. Valued at around £60m, he could partner Van Dijk and provide cover on the flank.
In midfield, Angelo Stiller of VfB Stuttgart, rated at £45m, could solve the defensive midfield void that has existed since Fabinho left. The 25-year-old German is a deep-lying creator with excellent passing and tactical intelligence, though he lacks pace and physicality.
On the left wing, Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain is a dream signing. The 23-year-old France international has blistering pace and elite dribbling, but PSG's £145m asking price may need negotiation. He could replace the departed Luis Diaz.
Finally, Ferran Torres of Barcelona, available for around £60m, could add goals and versatility in attack. The 26-year-old Spain international can play across the front line and would provide cover for the injury-prone Isak, with 40 goals and 10 assists in his last two seasons.
These four signings would give Iraola the tools to implement his intense attacking style and help Liverpool compete for major honours again.
