Paul Tansey, the older brother of former Scotland international Leigh Griffiths, was sent off during a Scottish Cup preliminary round match after confronting a fan. The 40-year-old was being substituted for Hawick when he leaped over a wall and faced a goading supporter, video footage shows.
Tansey removed his top and engaged in a heated exchange before being dragged away by two staff members. The referee subsequently showed him a red card.
Match Drama
Hawick equalised moments after the incident, taking the game against Penicuik into extra time. However, Daryl Healy scored the winning goal for Penicuik, eliminating Hawick from the competition.
Hawick boss Kenny Atchison condemned Tansey's behaviour, stating the club would handle the matter internally.
Club Response
Atchison said: "We've had a chat after the game and this morning after everything calmed down. It's being dealt with internally. The club cannot comment further until the referee's report comes in and we speak to the player again, that is the due process."
He added: "This is out of character for the Paul we have seen over the last 18 months as a club. We have never had any incident with him and he's always been a good trainer and he treats staff and younger players well."
Background
Both brothers have long histories in Scottish football. Leigh Griffiths, the more successful, earned 22 caps for Scotland and won seven Scottish league titles with Celtic. Tansey has played in the lower leagues for Dalkeith, Hawick, Penicuik, East Fife and Newtongrange.
