Former Newcastle prospect Alfie Harrison signs for Dundee
Ex-Newcastle prospect Alfie Harrison joins Dundee

Former Newcastle United prospect Alfie Harrison has signed for Scottish Premiership club Dundee on a short-term contract until January, with an option to extend further. The 20-year-old wide midfielder was released by the Magpies last summer and joined Dundee initially on trial, scoring in a friendly during the international break.

Career path from Blackburn to Newcastle

Harrison started out at Blackburn's academy before moving to Manchester City at the age of 10. He then joined Newcastle United on a permanent transfer at the age of 18, signing for an undisclosed fee in 2024, with some reports suggesting a seven-figure sum was paid.

He was once compared to Erling Haaland during his time at Manchester City. However, he was not handed a competitive debut by Newcastle and only appeared in friendly games under Eddie Howe, featuring in Sela Weekender matches against RCD Espanyol and Atletico Madrid before his release.

Dundee move and trial spell

Speaking after signing for Dundee, Harrison said: "I've loved every bit of my trial. From the first day I stepped into the building, it felt like the right atmosphere. It was somewhere I wanted to show what I'm about, and now hopefully I can push on and keep doing my thing."

He added: "The way everyone has welcomed me, you can see the love for the club. I'd love to be here for a long period of time, but that's down to me to show."

Dundee boss Steven Pressley said: "We had a feeling that when the window closed, our business was complete, but due to unforeseen circumstances around injury, we've been forced back into the market. As a result of that, Alfie joined us on trial several weeks ago and has worked really hard."

Pressley added: "We think he's a young player with great potential that can add competition to the squad, and we're delighted to welcome Alfie on board."

Newcastle's original signing

When Harrison signed for Newcastle two years ago, the club released a statement reading: "Midfielder Alfie Harrison has joined Newcastle United until the summer of 2026, signing for an undisclosed fee from Manchester City, subject to the necessary approvals."

Academy director Steve Harper said at the time: "We are delighted to secure Alfie's signature. His hunger to represent Newcastle United and continue his development here was obvious from the outset. He's a passionate, talented player who we are really looking forward to welcoming to the club and ultimately seeing in a black and white shirt."

Harper added: "Alfie's signing is part of a strategic move to make our PDP group younger, particularly the Under-21s, and I would like to thank the board and everybody involved at the club in making this move happen."
