Dietmar Hamann has criticised Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany for allowing Harry Kane to drop into deeper positions, describing the tactic as 'not acceptable' for a striker of the England captain's calibre.
Kane, 32, has scored 31 goals in 27 appearances this season, helping Bayern maintain an unbeaten league record. However, the former Bayern and Liverpool midfielder believes the forward should be deployed exclusively as a striker rather than sacrificing himself for the team.
In his column for Sky Germany, Hamann wrote: 'I don't know if Kompany is happy that Kane is no longer playing exclusively as a striker. In the long run – even though he's currently doing very well – it's not acceptable that Kane is winning balls in his own penalty area.'
Hamann also noted that Kane's goal output dipped significantly in the second half of his first two Bundesliga seasons, scoring just ten times after Christmas last term. He questioned whether Bayern can generate enough attacking threat in the Champions League against stronger opponents.
