Everton are working on a deal to sign Celtic defender Alistair Johnston, with the player reportedly keen on the move. The Toffees are also being urged to consider a move for Celtic forward Benjamin Nygren by former Blues winger Anders Limpar, who was part of the 1995 FA Cup-winning team.
Johnston keen on Everton move
According to the ECHO, Johnston has told Celtic he wants to join Everton, and manager David Moyes has already contacted Celtic boss Brendan O'Neill to inform him of the club's interest. However, the two clubs have yet to agree a fee for the Canada international, who played in Celtic's 1-0 win over Dundee on Monday night, with an Everton representative watching from the stands.
Limpar highlights full-back need
Limpar, speaking via SveaCasino, stressed the importance of strengthening at full-back, a position where Everton have historically been strong. He said: "All through the years, through Everton's history, the club has always had a good left-back and a good right-back. Seamus Coleman has been at the club for almost 20 years."
"We had Andy Hinchcliffe and Matt Jackson and so many other really, really good full-backs, and so that is a position Everton have to be strong in, and we have to buy the right players," he added.
Nygren as a potential signing
Limpar also praised Nygren, who scored 21 goals last season and caught his eye in Celtic's recent match. He said: "I like Benjamin Nygren a lot. He only played a couple of games for Sweden at the World Cup, but he would be a very good player in a Premier League side after what he's shown at Celtic, he can make that step now."
"The Scottish league is very tough and he has proven he can handle it. It's probably even tougher than the Premier League when it comes to the tackles," Limpar continued. "It would be good for Sweden too if somebody had a go at signing him this summer. Maybe Aston Villa or Newcastle United?"
Limpar concluded: "I think if Jack Grealish doesn't come back to Everton, Benjamin would be a good replacement for him as well. He can score goals and create goals too, I think he would score 15 goals in the Premier League playing for a club like Everton."
