David Moyes will be hoping Jordan Pickford can bring his commanding displays for England back to Everton after the goalkeeper's impressive performance in the 3-2 win over Mexico. The Everton number one was in inspired form at the Azteca Stadium, coming off his line to punch and catch crosses as England held on following Jarell Quansah's red card.
Pickford's heroics helped England set up a World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami. Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith believes the 32-year-old should adopt a similar approach in the Premier League for Everton.
Speaking to the ECHO, Smith said there has always been an impression that Pickford performs better for his country than his club. He added that the decision-making in Mexico was outstanding and that David Moyes might want to see more of that from his keeper. However, he stressed Pickford is unquestionably one of the top goalkeepers.
Meanwhile, Everton's back-up keeper Mark Travers has been linked with a move to newly promoted Coventry City. The Republic of Ireland international made just two Carabao Cup appearances last season after joining from Bournemouth.
Smith, when asked if replacing Carl Rushworth with Travers would be a gamble, said it would not be a massive one. He pointed to Travers' experience in the Premier League with Bournemouth and a loan spell at Middlesbrough, insisting the quality is there. Smith believes Travers will be eager to start matches regularly now.
