Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez Begins Club-Imposed Suspension
Chelsea vice-captain Enzo Fernandez was spotted watching his team's FA Cup quarter-final from the stands at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, marking the beginning of a two-match suspension imposed by the club. The Argentine midfielder received the sanction following comments made during the recent international break that appeared to advocate for a potential move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Manager Explains Decision to Sanction Vice-Captain
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior addressed the situation on Friday, confirming that Fernandez would miss both the FA Cup tie and the upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City. 'As a football club, with me as part of that process, we've made a decision,' Rosenior stated. 'He won't be available for tomorrow's game and he won't be available for Manchester City on Sunday. For Enzo, it's disappointing to speak in that way.'
Rosenior emphasized that while he maintains respect for Fernandez as both a player and person, the club felt compelled to act. 'What I will say about Enzo is in terms of him as a character, as a person, I've got no bad words to say about him,' the manager continued. 'But I think a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. So we had to make a sanction and that was a decision we've made.'
The Chelsea boss clarified that the decision was collective, involving multiple stakeholders within the club hierarchy. 'We are aligned in every decision that we make. So it was a joint decision. I'm saying that the door is not closed on Enzo. That's very important. It's a sanction.' Rosenior stressed the importance of protecting Chelsea's winning culture, stating: 'You have to protect, especially this football club, it's a winning football club with traditions of success. You have to protect that culture.'
Fernandez in Good Spirits Despite Suspension
Despite the disciplinary action, the 25-year-old Argentine international appeared in positive spirits during Chelsea's FA Cup encounter. Fernandez was observed laughing and joking with teammate Marc Cucurella behind the bench area. Cucurella himself began the match as a substitute, having avoided punishment for his own interview during the international break.
Cucurella had seemingly criticized Chelsea's transfer strategy and the departure of former manager Enzo Maresca in his comments. Rosenior addressed this situation separately, revealing he had held a lengthy conversation with the Spanish defender. 'I had a fantastic conversation with Marc yesterday, half an hour in my office,' the manager said.
'I want players, I've said to them from day one, if they've got any issue with how we do things, to come and speak to me and speak to sporting directors,' Rosenior explained. 'My disappointment in Marc's interview is where it went to. I think he should have spoken to us first about the things that he's feeling.'
The Chelsea manager emphasized his desire for open communication channels within the squad. 'I want players to feel like they can speak openly and honestly for the benefit of the football club. Those conversations we've had with Reece James, that's why Reece has signed a new contract, because he believes in where we're going.'
Agent Defends Fernandez Against 'Unfair' Punishment
Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, strongly defended his client following the announcement of the suspension. Speaking to The Athletic, Pastore called the punishment 'completely unfair' and questioned its timing given Chelsea's push for Champions League qualification.
'The punishment is completely unfair — banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team’s most important players,' Pastore argued. 'I think it’s far too harsh given Chelsea’s current situation, and there’s no real reason or justification for why he has been banned.'
The agent insisted that Fernandez's comments had been misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. 'We don’t understand the punishment because he doesn’t mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it; he only mentions Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he’d like to live in one day.'
Chelsea Make Strong Start Despite Off-Field Issues
On the pitch, Chelsea made an ideal beginning to their FA Cup quarter-final against opponents who took an early lead through Jorrel Hato in just the second minute. Fernandez and Cucurella watched from their positions behind the bench as the action unfolded at Stamford Bridge.
Rosenior concluded his remarks about Cucurella by expressing confidence in the defender's commitment to Chelsea. 'Marc is fully committed, he wants to be here. He's made that very, very clear to me. And he actually believes in where we're moving forward.' The manager acknowledged that building strong relationships within the squad takes time, noting: 'I've been here for two-and-a-half months. We've played 20 games. So to build those relationships and those connections takes time.'
The Chelsea boss also hinted at future plans for squad improvement, stating: 'As a football club, we know we need to improve, myself included. We actually know what we're going to do in the summer to achieve those objectives.'
